What is SY.Gigs?
SY.Gigs is a not-for-profit alternative ‘pop up’ music promotion venture based in Shrewsbury, UK.
The events bring together alternative music in Shrewsbury’s historic churches, creating special experiences. Each location adds its unique character, enhancing the atmosphere and deepening the connection between the audience, the music, and the town’s significant heritage.
Focusing on genres that push the boundaries of the mainstream, we aim to foster a sense of community and support well-being through the shared pleasure of immersive live music. These gatherings are more than concerts, they’re celebrations of creativity, culture and connection.
SY.Gigs thrives thanks to the dedication of our hosts, benefactors, volunteers, partners and a supportive community.
Special thanks go to our partners Glou Glou and Opus Media Productions, whose continued involvement makes our mission possible. Together, we keep the spirit of alternative music alive in Shrewsbury.

The Story: Why Nothing is Ordinary
SY.Gigs is more than just a music night; it’s a not-for-profit social impact initiative born right here in Shrewsbury. It’s driven by a simple, deep conviction: that the right kind of music, experienced in a unique, mindful setting, can profoundly benefit our mental health and build a stronger community connection.
The Spark: A Need for Something More
The initial idea for SY.Gigs was born out of necessity in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before then, I often found myself travelling long distances outside Shrewsbury just to experience the kind of independent and alternative music I craved, the sort that feels even more alive when set within a space that enhances the atmosphere. But after the pandemic, I no longer wanted to return to that cycle of constant travel. And while our town already had some fantastic events, there were still certain things I longed for that simply weren’t here.
I realised there was an opportunity to change that.
The biggest challenge, as it so often is in Shrewsbury, was finding suitable venues. That’s when the town’s stunning historic buildings began to make sense in a new way. These underused spaces not only met the practical need for quiet, self-contained environments, they also brought a unique ambience that instantly elevated the listening and performing experience.

Wellbeing is at the Core
I’ve been open about my own struggles with anxiety and depression from a young age, and music has always been a powerful source of relief during those darker, more melancholic spells. So, aligning SY.Gigs with a clear sense of social impact, particularly around wellbeing, felt like a natural fit.
For us, it’s not just about watching a gig. It’s about stepping away from the daily noise and immersing yourself in an environment and community that helps you feel better than when you first walked in. That intentional, shared, and attentive experience is absolutely at the heart of what we hope people take away.
Nothing is Ordinary: Our Unique Setting
Our events are known for transforming historic spaces. These environments add significant value for both the artists and the audience.
-
For the Artists: They genuinely love performing in beautiful, resonant buildings, a powerful contrast to the ‘square boxes’ they often play in commercially. The historical context of a venue truly elevates the performance.
-
For the Audience: It’s a significant benefit to experience music in such a beautiful space. Crucially, we focus on a mindful environment: there’s no clanking bar during the performance. The audience is seated, they watch, they listen, and they are fully immersed. It’s a very respectful and intimate setting for everyone.

Curating the Sound
My personal musical taste is incredibly eclectic, but the program is chosen specifically to be in keeping with the environment. Whether it’s ambient electronica, contemporary jazz, or experimental folk, I’m constantly asking: “What will this artist sound like in this space?” Will it resonate as wonderfully as it does on a record in a church or a historic library? By focusing on this synergy, we can consistently produce a wonderful sound that satisfies both the artist and the audience.
This dedication, combined with our reputation for selling out gigs, assures artists they’ll have a full, highly attentive house, something they are keen to experience outside of other venues.
The Measure of Success
As a not-for-profit, success is never about the money; we just aim to cover our costs over a seasonal program. The most important measure of success is that the artists feel they have a really respectful, attentive audience. I’m passionate about selling out gigs to give the artist that beautiful, validating experience of seeing a full house dedicated to their sound.

The Future
Our vision is for SY.Gigs to continue to evolve. I’m keen to explore creating our own original music content under the SY.Gigs brand, and, most importantly, I’m dedicated to encouraging younger audiences to experience our events. Live music is a beautiful way of finding your community.
If you usually stick to mainstream music, my encouragement to you is simple: “Nothing is Ordinary” is our brand philosophy. If you are curious, open-minded, and love music, try an SY.Gigs event. You’ll discover a unique experience in a beautiful setting, with a carefully curated evening designed to inspire. It’s a chance to hear an artist at their peak, performing in a way they rarely can in noisier, conventional venues.
